You don't need to tell your landlord

A landlord is only entitled to know about the IVA or Individual Voluntary Arrangement if they are a creditor. If you owe them backrent, then this is considered within the overall IVA proposal. Otherwise, the IVA is none of your landlord's business and you can go ahead with your tenancy as normal.

Tenancy should not be affected in any way by taking out an IVA, although if you choose to rent from an agency in the future, they may perform a credit reference search upon you before allowing you to rent from them.

An IVA is not advertised like a bankruptcy and attempting to rectify your financial situation does not damage your financial relationships with those excluded from the IVA.

It is important that you keep up with your rental payments as this is what keeps your landlord blissfully unaware of your negative credit status. If you get into trouble, you cannot suddenly include your landlord into an existing IVA agreement and you cannot take out two at the same time.

A top tip for dealing with your debts is to always place rent, food and basic bills at the top of your list of priorities of where you should spend your money.
